A family tree is a graphical representation of the ascending or descending genealogy of an individual, called cujus (the one on which the genealogy bears). By misuse of language, this structured representation of family ties between people is often called a tree in the image of the plant tree, but there are also other representations, for example circular or semicircular. By extension, this type of scheme can be used for taxons of any type of living being, even if we speak rather of genealogy for humans and pedigree for animals.
Even if it can be done manually, nowadays the creation of genealogical trees is facilitated by the computer tool which allows to manage the different modes of presentation of a family tree by taking into account the problem of the available space and jumps between the pages for a suitable print including A4. Less graphic, the pedigree list offers a more compact presentation.
Several websites make it possible to publish a genealogy in graphic form and to share it with other genealogists or with a circle of close people.
Before, those who were passionate about genealogy had to run city halls and other cemeteries in search of information. A job that had its charm, but that took a lot of time … and energy. Today, things are easier. At least when it comes to filling the nearest branches.
But above all, it seems obvious that we must start by probing his close family. All who are still alive: parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents, cousins, etc. Because even if the information you can get through this may require confirmation, they should be an interesting starting point. And even more so if you opt for an expanded family tree.
In terms of formatting your family tree, you can invest in software that will help you to classify your data, register on a dedicated site, download an application or choose to fill templates, graphics or illustrated.
Let us recall then that in France, the civil registrars register births, marriages and deaths since 1792. Thus our country possesses old and rich archives. And what is more, which are made available to individuals in a completely free way. Provided you go to the town hall concerned – when the search is less than 75 years – or departmental archives.
There, one can even find notarial archives which can go up to the 15th century. Archives that can be supplemented by parish registers on which can appear “secondary” information that can be useful to trace the thread.
Finally, and this is where things get simpler, there are documents available directly online. You will be able to find data already collected by others. Because in your tree, you may not be the only one to search. You will also find there now, thanks to the law Digital Republic – which makes the archives of the public authorities -, several hundreds of millions of data of civil status and part of the departmental archives.
